Our speech branch, formally known as individual events (IE), gives so much freedom on how you use your voice! We have twelve competitive events that fall under three categories: improvisation, acting, and original composition. So, whether you want to become a fiscal policy expert with US extemp, perform a hilarious duet with duo interpretation, or speak from your heart with original oratory, IE provides you the space to do that.
IE not only grants total freedom over what you say, but also allows great flexibility. Most practice can be done alone or in small groups, and we have asynchronous competitions, allowing you to take on other roles in life.
But practicing on your own does not mean you go unsupported. With captains, coaches, and supporters familiar with different events, you will find the help to improve quickly. Just last year, we had an extemporaneous speaker progress to being the an alternate to nationals after 5 months of competing.
And the speech skills you learn here will take you very far, and we have the people to prove it! Our alumni from Northeastern, Boston University, UC Irvine, and UCLA regularly help us with competitions.
