Policy Debate is an extremely fun and intellectually-stimulating activity that also teaches you tons about the world! The competition format is classic evidence-based verbal argumentation that will help you develop both speaking and research skills. The topic this year is about various ways countries could interact with or develop the arctic.
Policy Debate is unique for many reasons. We compete at the highest level on the national circuit, qualifying teams every year to both the TOC—the most competitive national tournament—and the CHSSA California State Championship. Additionally, every year, varsity teams travel across the country to tournaments in LA, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Lexington to compete. Frequent travel is, in my opinion, one of the most fun and unique parts of the Policy branch.
Joining the team is a great way to meet people, including upperclassmen who are happy to answer questions and give insight on Lowell life. Plus, policy debate specifically is excellent for college admissions because of both the rigor and the national-level competition. In recent years we have sent kids to Harvard, UC Berkeley, Emory, and Princeton.
